The current generation models, such as the iPhone XR, iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, come at a high premium which deters many potential buyers from investing in these phones.
Most of the times, buyers opt for the older but cheaper models and Apple has been happily pushing out very old iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s series models. However, newer Android phones at these prices are now outselling the old iPhones and Apple has finally decided to make a bold move – pull the cord on the older iPhone models.
According to a new report from The Economic Times, Apple has finally pulled the plug off from production of some of the older models. The models that meet their end include 2016’s iPhone SE, 2014’s iPhone 6, and 2015’s iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. With these models, out, the cheapest iPhone that you can buy now is 2016’s iPhone 7 that starts at almost Rs 40,000 in India.
The iPhone 6 has now been on sale for a long time in India as the upcoming iOS 13 won’t be supporting this generation of the iPhone. Apple also pulled off the iPhone SE from India a few months ago as it wanted to shift the focus on higher-end models. The iPhone 6s has been selling at a sub-Rs 30,000 price for a while and has been doing some good sales numbers for Apple.
However, the iPhone 6s generation is now on its last software support cycle and after iOS 13, chances are these old models won’t be getting any support. The iPhone 7 will be the only cheaper phone offering two more software updates. Additionally, the iPhone 6s from 2015 is quite old now and there are better options at similar prices from the Android universe. with superior hardware features.
The primary reason, though, for taking this move is to ensure higher profits for the company from the more expensive models. Apple has been struggling to push units of the newer iPhone X series phones due to its higher prices. The company has lately reduced the price of the iPhone XR drastically to make it more affordable than before and it hopes these offers along with the discontinued old models make people switch to or go for the newer models, which could bring in more revenue. The removal of older cheaper models is expected to raise the average prices thereby resulting in more profit. Apple is rumoured to begin production of the iPhone XR and iPhone XS models in the Indian market soon.
That said, the iPhone 6s is still selling on Amazon and these could be the remaining surplus units that Apple didn’t manage to sell. The iPhone 6s is the only iPhone right now to feature a 3.5mm headphone jack and it debuted with Apple’s 3D Touch.
This is a much-needed move for Apple in a market like India where its Android rivals are posting better numbers than before. OnePlus with its more affordable phones, such as the OnePlus 7 Pro and OnePlus 7, has been dominating the market whereas Samsung is also bringing newer premium models to ensure better sales numbers.
