Mayawati Defocuses From Promise, Gives Major BSP Posts To Brother, Nephew

BSP chief Mayawati on Sunday while defocusing from her promise of not giving an official post to family member, appointed her younger brother Anand as the party’s vice-president and nephew Akash Anand as the national coordinator.

The decision came as a surprise for most members of the party as Mayawati had said in May 2018 that no member of her family would be given an official post. While announcing this, she had also removed Anand as BSP vice-president, just months after his appointment in October 2017. Anand has been facing several allegations of corruption.

BSP members who attended a meeting with Mayawati in Lucknow on Sunday where these decisions were announced said even as she declared her relatives’ names, she insisted that she was against dynastic politics, but was under pressure.

On January 17, two days after she celebrated her birthday, Mayawati had announced that she would groom her nephew for a bigger role in the party. The former UP chief minister had been peeved with media reports about Akash, who had made a public appearance with her on her birthday.

She had said that as a befitting reply to the “casteist and anti-Dalit” media which had ignored nepotism in other parties, she would “definitely bring Akash into the (BSP) movement and give him the opportunity to learn”. She had added, “If this troubles some anti-Dalit media, then our party doesn’t care.” A senior BSP member said Mayawati made it clear at the meeting that BSP would not be contesting the upcoming bypolls in UP or even the 2022 assembly elections in alliance with SP.
